It’s named after the geographic equator line that runs across it in the north, so when you visit Ecuador, be sure to check out La Mitad del Mundo (The Equator) for positive proof that you are on the actual equator line! In Quito, the capital and a UNESCO heritage site, at approximately 9, 000 feet above sea level, you’ll find Plaza de San Francisco, La Basílica and La Compañía de Jesús, all of which are great places to stop by while you’re there.

Take the Teleférico (cable car ride) up the slope of the Pichincha to 13,000 feet above sea level. Visit Otavalo (Indigenous market – two hours from Quito), and Cotacachi where you can get good leather at excellent prices, and you don’t want to miss out on a trip to the Cui Cocha Crater Lake either. The Galapagos cannot be missed for its spectacular natural beauty and diverse wildlife during the first half of the year. Plus there are scores of other things to keep you occupied in this beautiful and diverse country…
